“Praying is like a rocking chair – it’ll give you something to do, but it won’t get you anywhere.”
Gypsy Rose Lee
Continuing on yesterday’s thought of Who we are , I would add the characters of food that I have learned from my upbringing and the knowledge that I acquired from here and there.
According to the Ayurvedic studies the food can be classified into three branches:
Based on what you eat , your tendencies and thought process follow.
Satvik food is anything that grows above the ground e.g. plants, fruits, leaves, cereals, grains, dairy products etc . The consumption of satvik diet induces alertness and calmness
Tamsik food is the one that grows below the ground e.g onion, garlic .This food takes time to digest but it has certain properties that can be beneficial if taken in very small amounts e.g. we know about the antioxidant properties of garlic. But ingestion can drive your concentration bipolar as one can be concerned about the bad breath and all.
Rajsik food is largely based on preparation.Rajsik in hindi means something related to prosperity, king like. When you have a lot of money then of course you can throw a lot of spices in your kettles and pots 🙂 It has pungent odor, induces passion, sensuality .They have hot ,spicy, salty taste. Generally the power, prestige, prosperity are the key points that fill the minds of those who eat rajsik food.
This comes from the ancient Indian wisdom but it is very difficult to remain on the satvik diet. I am a vegetarian and I maintain satvik diet but I do take onion, garlic in moderate amount.
Its a common saying among those who practice vegetarianism that “YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT”
Irrespective of vegetarianism or non vegetarianism one thing holds true for all –
“WE ARE WHAT WE LOVE “
Thinking of expanding your audience size ? Here are few thoughts !
So I’d been thinking since I began 11 months ago about how I could help other bloggers grow their audience as quickly as I did. Y’all know how passionate I am about making a proper living from blogging already.
I started doing Blogging Tips and then I wanted to offer online events that could help boost folks’ audiences. I had quite a few in mind but a busy schedule and some tough periods put paid to getting them up and running last year. But now…here is the first!
Feel free to use this post to say hi and introduce yourself to other bloggers. Add links to your books, your poems, your enterprises.
Tell folks who you are and what you blog about so people will want to check you out. Also go say hi to others. It is all key to growing your audience.
Frankly I got tired of…

Few days ago I posted on Facebook “I secretly love Chicago’s weather.Despite everyone cribbing about it every day, I go out every single time when they say weather is bad. I love it when snow hits my face directly and blocks my vision.Even though my face swells temporarily and the frozen jaws render me speechless.I don’t mind putting my feet in the puddle while crossing the streets and taking my gloves off every now and then to feel the wind despite its numbing coldness.I don’t know why the bells of the cathedrals chime every single time I pass through either rush street or state street . Serendipity ,eh?? I like to put my feet in spine chilling water of lake Michigan ,which trust me can give head on competition to any sea.Its great to see snowflakes on your window every single morning and think of fractals. It zones me out .”
Today in the blizzard named ” Linus ” with approx 40 MPH wind speed in place, I went to Michigan lake’s beach. It was as usual numbing cold and frigid. The first look reminded me of any polar region. Last year Chicago was colder than Antarctica and the polar bears at Lincoln park zoo had to be taken inside as it was too cold for them 😀 . The waves were huge and I for a second thought a tsunami is coming.
The wind was intense and the snow was arduous. it was just too difficult to see anything and there was a great chance that the needle like snowflakes scratch the retina. My hands were totally numb and a little clot was formed on index finger of left hand. Though I was not in the best of health given the injured knee ,injured back and a very bad ankle, the 20 minute trip to the beach was very rewarding. Sitting inside your home and seeing the snow is comfortable choice but feeling that gusty wind on your face, feeling that cold air on your scalp gives you a feeling that earth and nature can be unforgiving.
While I was standing there and admiring the vast expanse of Lake Michigan and was getting slapped persistently by the wind, rain and snow I had another realization . I realized that the trench coat that I purchased 2 years ago from Macy’s in New York was the best investment I have made till now.I generally get train of thoughts and the next thing that struck me was that in different circumstances different things, different people take precedence . Right now this coat is so dear to me and the moment I will be in my room the same coat will not be at the top of the totem pole of priorities. The same is the case with people. Sometimes you are very important to someone and sometimes you are just someone. This cycle of everything to something to nothing can be painful but it teaches you few things in life. The important thing is to cherish the present and forget the rest. I know its easier said than done but one has to try at least. For your own sake, for the sanity of your brain and for striking the balance.
Chicago taught a lot of things to me and surely if bad weather were an empire then Chicago would be the queen.
Its the city which shows me such views from my apartment window and even in frigid winters helps me meditate.
On 7th January 12 people were killed and 11 were injured by 2 gunmen in the Charlie Hebdo office in Paris,France . The attackers were from Islamic radical groups and while claiming their right to 72 virgins they shouted “Allahu Akbar(God is great in Arabic)”. Any form of terror or violence is not justified for getting any solution to any darn problem in the world.Killing innocent people shows how weak these extremists are from inside and are just acting on the whims of a few fanatics. We have been getting news from many countries that youths are joining ISIS .Leaving the comfort of their homes, they are joining the so called holy war in the name of religion.Let’s not get into the reasons why they are doing so as a sane mind won’t accept such terms at any cost. We are not living in an ancient Roman or Greek civilization that we have to give our lives up for the empire expansion. To me it’s sort of jingoism , jingoistic for a land or a nation which doesn’t even exists. I was deeply saddened by this act of barbarism. Media covered this news extensively and it deserved to be covered. Large rallies were carried out in various countries and the one held in France saw the participation of 2 million people. Most of he world leaders joined that and the slogan ‘Je Suis Charlie(I am Charlie in French)’ got viral. I accept these slogans and movements in the light that we do not fear the attackers and will not be intimidated by them. Right now I am not getting in the debate on how liberal a religion is and how well it’s followers can accept the criticism on their prophet or What is the tolerance level of the satires it can endure. Is there a limit to freedom of speech ? I don’t know. But nothing justifies the violence. I don’t understand what the ardent followers of Al Qaida , Jaish e Mohammed ,ISIS ,Boko Haram, Haqqani Network want to achieve ? Have you seen the condition these guys live in ? Do you want us to go back to Stone Age? Do you want us to follow the sharia law? Just because we don’t follow your religion doesn’t mean you will kill us. Just because we don’t share common ideas on the concept of a deity/prophet ,it doesn’t mean that we deserve to be at the receiving end of your bullets from Kalashnikov .Does your holy book really advocates violence and brutal murders of non believers (Qafirs) . And most important question “have your ever read your holy books”. This question is for all be it Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists or any religion that exists in the world . If you love your so called values so much then why do you have a place called Dubai in your area where everything condemned by your books is sold. Sex,drugs, alcohol ! Every damn thing ! Isn’t it hypocrisy ? What you guys are failing to understand is that this war which has been going on for years is a marketing propaganda. It’s a way to keep the arms and ammunition business intact. One religious fanatic gets some vague ideas and people start following him blindly. This is totally unacceptable.
Anyway, I digressed a lot from my main topic here. So, 12 people got killed that day and the media covered it extensively. And it did deserve to be covered. A lot of friends of mine discussed this event with me and we were bewildered. But one thing was common in those discussions that whenever I brought the topics of terror events in other parts of the world up to my friends, they had not even iota of idea about those events. I was very appalled at this ignorance. The friends of mine come from all walks of life, few are very learned and scholarly and few not so much. The feeding ground is common for all of them : newspapers, print media, digital news, social media etc . The culprit is media’s hypocrisy and highly selective and biased approach There were attacks in a Pakistani school and there was minimal coverage of the event. I see that such news get a tiny column on the front page or the landing pages of the websites. Apart from few activists and other people no one has any idea what Boko haram (The name translates to “Non Islamic education is sin”)is doing in Nigerian and other territories. The social media gets filled with the hashtags ,weblinks and other memes when any such event happens in the western world but we see the usual “cute kitten and puppies” videos when such things happen in some other parts. I am not saying that one event holds more gravity than the other . Loss of even one life in the name of religion is irreplaceable damage to the society. The grief that is experienced by the loved ones is immeasurable. But this hypocrisy needs to be stopped. Every human in the world is made of the blood and flesh, only the outer covering differs. One who died in the attack might not be important to you but he was important to few others. The stance of media , the political leaders needs to be changed and this senseless bloodbath in name of factions, casts, creeds, colors and religions needs to be stopped.
Let there be peace.
