Month: March 2014

You are selected

End of July 2008 , and our campus placement season had just commenced.Everyone was in high hopes and was excited to get our first job offers. So what happens is companies first shortlist your resume/CV based on your academic , co curricular performance or according to their own yardsticks . After that they hold an aptitude test or call for the interview directly. And After interview ,if you get selected you have a job offer and that night you have to give a small booze treat to your friends in the hostel.

We all had similar plans, and when you are among the department toppers then your hopes get much higher. But 2008 was a cursed year, recession hit the industry right at the time when companies visit the campus for job offers. Everything plummeted. Jobs were hard to get, Computer Science guys had got few offers but other departments were putting on an abysmal show. Two months passed and I didn’t get even a single offer. It was depressing indeed. During this time I was doing my internship at National physical Lab , working on some Cesium atomic clocks . I went back to college in late August, last year of engineering degree is usually relaxed one.Students don’t turn up and when they get job offers in hand, they just give guest appearances in classes. Profs. are lenient as well during the final two sem.

I went back to college in late August, very few students were there. Me and one of the guy who was a topper of the department once went to a local joint to have some food. There we met some more classmates of ours. So the conversation begins :

Me : Whats up ? What did you do during the summers?

R : Nothing much, just prep for CAT , what else, only 2 months left now.

Me : Yes

R : Coming to college tomorrow?

Me : I don’t know, don’t feel like coming. Will see.

A: Tomorrow another firm is visiting the campus.

Me: Is it, whats the name?

A: I don’t know, but they manufacture some glass products.

Me : Why will they need F** electronics engineers for this work.

A: F ** I know.

A: So, sitting in the aptitude test for it ?

Me: Let’s see, not sure at all.

Next Morning 7:30 am

RK : What? You are sleeping ? Why aren’t you ready ? Don’t you want to sit for the placement test for this firm.

Me: I don’t know, I don’t even know the name.

RK: Let’s go an find out

Me: Ok, Let me shower.

After taking a bath.

Me: I don’t have shirt to wear, this shirt I had worn around 2 months ago and is hanging like this for all this period and it has got brown stains as well.

RK: No one is going to marry you there, just wear whatever you have.

Me : Look at my trouser, its itching me . I am sure some micro organisms are inside. And look at the shoes, green moss has started developing over the leather. I don’t think its a good idea for me to go.

After a lot of persuasion from RK, I gave up and wore the same shirt, trouser and dirty shoes.

We reached college and gave the aptitude test. Quite unconventional aptitude test ,a lot of calculations, and critical reasoning.

After an hour or so, they announced the results and both RK and I had cleared it. They were calling to submit the CV.

Both RK and I looked at each other. None of us had our CV with us. Meanwhile they announced that interviews will be conducted in the Computer center. I told them , that give us 10-15 min and we will submit the CVs. The HR said ok.

I and RK rushed to comp lab and copied a format and wrote whatever we could in 10 minute time frame. Everything was same in our CVs except the names and addresses.

A second year guy was volunteering to help the training and placement guys and was collecting the CVs. I put our data at the bottom of the stack and said to RK, see there are 20 odd people selected for the interview round, so even if one interview stretches for 10 minute, we will be called approximately after 2 hours or so. In the meanwhile we can revise some common concepts that they can ask .

RK was confident , so was I. The moment we were trying to leave the comp center to go to an upper floor to some empty class room to study, my name was called. I was startled.

The stupid junior guy had turned the stack around and instead of the bottom, our CVs were at the top now.

At such times, you cannot do much except hold your nerves. I said to myself, whatever will happen will happen and entered the room.

They asked me simple questions, why do you want to join us. I thought to myself, till yesterday I didnt even know the name of your firm, why would I want to join you? But gave some sensible reply.Few more questions and the interviewers said, we are done with you.

At around 5 or 6 pm results were announced , out of the 5 who were selected I and RK were among them.

The feeling was ecstatic

Game Theory in Art Institvte Chicago

Last night I was in the art institute of Chicago for the after dark hours in the modern wing .

Honestly speaking , I was a little bit disappointed and was on the verge of leaving when I heard some interesting conversations.

While I was doing so, I observed the gender demographics of the crowd. As usually the number of girls were less as compared to the number of males. Now, according to Nash equilibrium from Game theory, every male tries to hit on the most beautiful female, I should try ,go and talk to the second most prettiest girl .My chances of being with her will be high according to the game theory.

I know its preposterous to rank people according to their beauty, as its a relative term .

The result is not self explanatory, the global optimum result (prettiest girl here) doesn’t come out to be the rational choice.

See the video to understand more about this Nash equilibrium.

It is similar to the prisoner dilemma where they face the question whether to confess or not.

не кашлеяй ,Дорогая

не кашлеяй ,Дорогая !

That was the text that I received on my cell few days ago from a Russian-Ukrainian friend of mine.

I wondered what it is ! Some code or what?

Meanwhile I was wondering ,he called me up and told me he sent a text meant for his girlfriend to me by mistake . I asked him the meaning. He said it means, Don’t cough, darling pronounced as Ne Kashleyaj, Dorogaya.

I was amused.

Dorogaya is the endearment.

I like knowing the endearments in different languages 🙂

After Dark !

There is  a friend of mine who jeers at me patronizingly for my interest in visiting museums and libraries. Actually , most of them give me a frosty nose stare when I propose such a visit . Anyway, I am incorrigible as well .I go alone and enjoy.

In Chicago, I hardly know anyone. At office , there is only one guy in the team and he is always busy with something or the other.

Going out and party every weekend till you drop dead is not my idea but I like it once in a while. In  Delhi, Bangalore I have done it many times and I miss it when I am in the beautiful city of Chicago. Night life is active here but going out alone is very boring. No one to talk to or share my anecdotes 😀 Not that I didn’t try but but wasn’t very successful.

Last night , I had one such opportunity. Exploring a museum in the night. Now, such events don;t take place often. So, I paid for a rather expensive ticket and went there at 9 pm. To my surprise, a lot of people were there. I was happy that people are ready to visit museums and art galleries even on friday night . But no one was alone, each and every single person was with someone or the other. Groups of girls, few families, few couples , few groups of businessmen ,some old connoisseurs and yes , me. After having a drink, visiting all the galleries that were open for the night, and talking to people on what they thought about a particular painting of Christopher Wools, I wanted to head out as it was turning out to be another drab evening for me.When I got up to head out, one of the bartender girls approached me and asked me if I would like to taste the drink of the hour,I said ,”Ok” . and She sprayed a mix of bourbon and some lime and carrot juice in my mouth and was looking for an affirmative nod, I nodded though I wasn’t sure whether I liked the taste or not. Then I started to head out, but just before I could grab my coat I overheard a woman saying to her family “Too bad that we are not going to be together on Easter, its the tradition that keeps us together”  Her daughter said “Now don’t start crying, why on earth of all the places are we here?  and by the way its not the tradition ,its Jack Daniels and Johnnie Walker who give the feeling of togetherness “.

What a reply, I was thinking after bursting into laughter .Suddenly I decided to stay for some more time .

There was this drunk girl whose friend/ or boyfriend was not so drunk and the girl was dragging him along to the dance floor and the guy was acting like a baby.

Another very drunk girl was pointing at something , and at that moment a museum staff’s papers fell out of the file. Now trust me, that girl had not even that much strength that she could hold herself up but she reached out to help that staff member and started collecting fallen papers for her. Seriously, liquor makes empathetic human beings and gives them the courage to do something which they can’t 😀

Also, how well dressed and civilized everyone was looking when they joined the gathering , but after a drink or two everyone is using the F word as an adjective. F this F that. I am not against the usage of the word but whats surprising is people use it a lot and in front of their parents, kids . I have slightly different opinion on this. Everyone knows ,one day or the other kids will know these but let them discover these by themselves. Don’t spoil it for them .

Vegetarianism in 40 Min ?

If you have 4 burners on your gas stove , what can you create in 20 minutes?

The point is it needs to be healthy and should adhere to the plant based diet concept.

I was busy in office calls since morning and was working from home. I had honey oats as the breakfast , and at around 1 pm I was dying of hunger. I had 35 minute break between two successive online discussions and see what I did and everything was done from scratch.

White rice boiled, mix vegetables fried in olive oil with black pepper , salt and the famous madras curry powder. The mix veg had a small potato, few pieces of broccoli, carrots, onions, spring onions/scallions , red bell pepper.

I caramelized half an onion in olive oil and  balsamic vinegar. People generally cook them for an hour, but I like the crunchy taste of  onion so I take them off the flame after 10 -15 min or so. The corn was boiled and was so juicy. OMG !! I had an avocado lying in my fridge for few days now and I had no idea of what to do with it. I have started eating avocado only after coming to US, and I like its salad and dip. So, I thought of preparing guacamole , I mashed avocado after cutting it, mixed half an onion sliced one, one tomato , pepper and salt and one spoon lemon juice(because I had only half a lemon with me 🙂 )

Who says Veg food can’t be tasty and healthy and doesn’t provide you with all the nutrients ?

I love so many colors in my plate 🙂

Scent of a woman

Today while at work , I was searching something on google and there was a news item regarding the Missing Malaysian Jet  MH 370 and the caption was “O’ captain , my captain” . These words rang a bell in my mind.

Its a poem written by Whitman about the death of Abraham Lincoln . Why do I know this?

Simply , because I have watched the movie “Dead poet’s society” at least 3 times. The last scene of the movie is ineffable. I don’t have words for what Robin Williams, Mr. Keating does for the students.

He shows them how to live , how to think ! Splendid movie. Why is there lack of such movies ? I don’t even know to what genre should such beauties belong to, on a high level its a drama but a drama which leaves a mark on you.

Anyway, when I saw this quote I instantly googled Dead Poet’s society and opened the imdb page. It was showing the recommendations . And Scent of a woman was one of them. I never go by the imbd ratings , but sometimes I look them up. This movie has decent one , I think its 7.9 .

I watched it just now and what a masterpiece. The beautiful relation between Mr. Slade and Charlie. Its simply cannot be explained in words.

For most of us the best scene in the movie would be the speech which Al Pacino gives, indeed it was the finest oration I have heard lately but what I liked was the face expression on a nervous Charlie when he sees Slade entering the disco session(disciplinary committee) . How the downward curve of his lips , turn into an upward parabola 🙂

I loved the movie.

That’s where from I get my protein – Tofu

That's where from I get my protein - Tofu

I am sure every meat eater has asked this question to a vegetarian guy, from where do you get your protein.
Also, I just do not understand when they say don’t have meat, just taste the gravy.
Why? Why taste the gravy ? I don’t really understand this preposterous preposition.
Tofu, Eggplant, scallions, white onion, garlic, salt and pepper. That’s it !!
